The caacQ and Donations

The caacQ is a non-for-profit organization, incorporated under the laws of Quebec. All of our activities are currently financed through membership fees paid by our member shelters and donations from individuals.

December, 2008, the Board of Directors of the caacQ decided that the organization will not pursue charitable registration at this time. As a consequence, we will not be able to issue charitable donations receipts for income tax purposes. We can, and will, however, issue a caacQ receipt for every donation we receive. We will have our annual financial report available upon request.

We would like to explain why we have taken this action

In order to obtain and maintain charitable status, a non-for-profit organization must comply with certain legislative provisions set out by the federal government. One of these provisions significantly restricts the resources—such as time and money—that a charity may spend on what the government defines as “lobbying activities.” This definition includes activities such as working for changes to law, such as municipal bylaws or provincial legislation.

At this time, the caacQ is working to provide information to the public and solicit elected officials to bring about change. The caacQ website will contain suggestions and “how to” bring about the necessary changes please see services.

Meetings with elected officials are part of our agenda for 2011

We believe that these activities are very important in recognizing the issues and to find solutions resulting in protecting lives and encourage compassion for companion animals. If the caacQ were to apply for charitable status, we would be unable to continue with these activities. If you have any questions about this decision, please forward them to us at info@caacq.ca
