Why should I adopt from a member of the CAACQ?
The CAACQ encourages the public to adopt a companion animal from a member affiliated with the CAACQ. They will help you find the truly perfect match. Furthermore, no animal is released from our adoption centers without being sterilized prior to adoption, which is a critical step in controlling the animal population and reducing the number of homeless pets in Quebec.
- All animals are seen by a vet and vaccinated as required.
- All members affiliated with the CAACQ sterilize their pets before adoption
- Dogs and cats are evaluated for their temperament and level of activity
- A screening process of potential guardians is a pre requisite
- A trial period is offered by some members of the CAACQ
- Affiliates of the CAACQ offer post adoption support to assist with the transition phase
CAACQ members do not impose a time limit for adoptable animals
Why shouldn't I purchase a pet from a store?
Many pet stores in Quebec obtain their animals from puppy mills and kitten mills. Reports indicate that many animals from mills are more likely to have physical ailments due to the lack of veterinary care and bad breeding practices, emotional scars from lack of human contact and socialization. Thousands of animals in crates are suffering daily in order to fill the demand for the consumer seeking to purchase a pet. We also know that certain pet stores purchase from improvised breeders commonly called "home breeders" in order to project a better image than that of a puppy mill or kitten mill.
Responsible breeders will not sell their animals through pet stores, since they want to personally meet and interview the person(s) who will be caring for the animal.
Why shouldn't I purchase a pet on the Internet? ... Buyers beware!
Internet advertising/classified has created a business opportunity for indiscriminate breeders. Substandard practices are applicable to a great number of individuals who post their animals for sale on the Internet/classified.
Classified ads on the Internet listing litters and upcoming litters immediately arouse suspicion. Many animals from mills are more likely to have physical ailments due to the lack of veterinary care and bad breeding practices, emotional scars from lack of human contact and socialization. Responsible breeders will not sell their animals through the Internet/classified.
